How to slay the 2024 Wines2Whales like a boss - whether you’re a trail queen or a newbie

In just a few weeks the 2024 edition of the Wines2Whales start line will be buzzing with nervous anticipation. Three days, over 200 kilometers, some serious climbs, and - of course - plenty of time to wonder, “Why did I think this was a good idea?” But spoiler alert: IT’S ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA. Let’s get into what you need to be ready for, because this race? It’s not just a race. It’s a vibe. And we’re here to make sure you tackle it like the queen you are.

 1. The Gear: Yes, it's important, but let's not get overwhelmed

For experienced riders, you probably have your gear sorted down to the exact PSI in your tires. But first-timers, breathe. You don't need the latest carbon-fiber, rocket-propelled spaceship disguised as a bike. (Though, hey, if you have one - bonus points.) Just make sure your trusty steed is well-maintained and you have the basic trailside tools. Nobody wants to be that person fixing a flat while watching the pack whiz by.

And for the love of all things fabulous, invest in a decent pair of cycling shorts. Trust me, your bum will thank you by Day 3 when it's no longer numb from bumping along the trail.

2. Training: Or... Sort of?

Look, if you've been putting in the hours on the trails and have thighs that could crush watermelons, you're golden. But if your training plan involved more Netflix marathons than actual marathons, don't panic. It’s only three days, right? Just kidding, you’ll be fine. Embrace your inner tortoise - this isn’t a sprint, it’s a party with a side of cycling.

3. The Trails: Where magic meets “Oh My Quads”

Day 1: The honeymoon phase. The trails are fun, scenic, and you’ll be thinking, “I can totally do this!” Spoiler alert: Day 2 is when the real fun begins. It’s not called the “Play Day” for nothing - prepare for gnarly descents, a few swear words, and some moments of pure bliss when you nail that tricky technical section (or just avoid face-planting).

Day 3 is where the magic happens. You’ll start tired but somehow finish on a high because hello - YOU'RE RIDING TO THE SEA! Imagine the cheers, the beach vibes, and that sweet, sweet finish line.

4. Gees!

For the uninitiated, gees means spirit, and trust me, this race is packed with it. From your fellow riders cheering you on when your legs feel like jelly, to the volunteers at the water points handing out bananas like it’s their life’s purpose, you’ll be overwhelmed by the support. Just shout “gees!” when you need a boost, and like magic, it’ll appear.

5. The Vibe: Like glamping, but with more lycra

The race village is a magical place. Think summer camp for adults. You’ll bond with strangers over tired legs and war stories from the day’s ride. Plus, the food is next level - because you deserve more than just gels and bars after 70 kilometers of pedaling.

Expect a vibey village, good wine (obviously - it’s in the name), and maybe even a cheeky massage. Race village life is about celebrating the journey, not just surviving it.

6. Friends along the way: Who needs a Tinder profile?

Wines2Whales is about the friendships forged through sweat, mud, and sheer willpower. You’ll high-five someone at the start line, share snacks with them halfway through, and by the end, you’ll be planning your next riding adventure together. There’s something about mutual suffering that turns strangers into BFFs in record time.

7. Crossing the finish line: Tears, laughter, and (maybe) wine

When you cross that finish line on Day 3, it’s a mix of emotions - pride, relief, exhaustion, and joy. You’ll be handed a well-earned medal and possibly indulge in a glass of wine. At that moment, you’ll know you’ve conquered more than just a mountain. You’ve conquered yourself. Cue dramatic music.

But seriously, the sense of accomplishment is like nothing else. Whether it’s your tenth stage race or your first, crossing that line is unforgettable.

8. What’s next? More riding. Duh.

So, you’ve finished Wines2Whales. You’re on a high and already thinking about next year. Because guess what? You’re hooked. The adventure, the trails, the gees - they're calling your name again.

In the meantime, you'll be regaling your friends with epic tales from the trails, showing off your new medals, and maybe (just maybe) taking a break from lycra for a while. Or not. Who are we kidding?

Ready, Set, Wine

Whether you're a seasoned rider or about to pop your Wines2Whales cherry, remember - it’s not just about finishing. It’s about enjoying every crazy, muddy, joyful second. From the stunning trails to the world-class organisation (seriously, they’ve thought of everything), this is more than a race. It’s an experience.

So pack your sense of adventure, a good playlist for the road trips, and - of course - your favorite post-race beverage. See you at the start line, trail queens! Let’s make some memories.

P.S. There’s definitely wine at the start, middle and end. You're welcome.
