BMT Racing Team gears up for Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience

The BMT Racing Team will be out in full force on Saturday 30 November 2019 and Sunday 01 December 2019 when they take on the 2019 Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience at the beautiful Blaauwklippen Wine Estate.

“We started in 2008 with two riders, Unathi Masopi and Thando Nthuthu from Kayamandi (Stellenbosch). Songo Fipaza from songo.info assisted in spotting talent,” says Chris Norton, Manager BMT Racing Team and Owner of the BMT Bike Shop in Stellenbosch. “The team has since grown to twelve members (including one female rider) that reside in either Kayamandi or Lorenzo in Jonkershoek and range in age from 23 – 37. Through the support of great sponsors our team has the right equipment, training and expertise to take all riders to the top despite their circumstances. The team trains at Maties Gym (who sponsors their contracts). We have a weekly training schedule that we stick to and have programs for the bigger stage races.”

“We are grateful to Stillwater Sports for the Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience entries,” continues Norton. “Without this sort of support the team would never be able to show their talent to the wider community. We love this race! It happens in our backyard which is where we train. By participating our riders are exposed to people that they would never socialize with and have fun with. They get an understanding of racing conditions and for the better riders it’s a great chance to show their skills to the local community that has supported them.”

Thando Nthuthu (37) and Sive (Besty) Boyce (26) are two of the BMT Racing Team members that will take on the challenge of the Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience.

“The challenge of getting through the course and getting to the finish is what attracts me to the sport,” says Nthuthu. “I am really looking forward to riding our own trails and beating Chris.”

According to Boyce, her goal is simpler. “I am a beginner so getting to the finish is my only goal. I am just looking forward to riding my bike. I live for it.”
