2020 Spur MTB League cancelled due to Covid-19

The remainder of the 2020 Spur MTB League has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The league released this statement and hope to see everyone on the start line in 2021.

Dear SSMTBL Family,

It is with great disappointment that the Spur Schools MTB League announces the cancelation of the 2020 season.

After consultation with our title sponsor, Spur Steak Ranches, and governing body Schools Cycling South Africa (SCSA), a unanimous decision was taken with the safety of all in mind; that the implementation of the 2020 season is not possible.

The effect of COVID-19 has been widespread and the distress and severe hardship caused, immense. The League has decided that efforts to salvage this season should be secondary to the very real and pressing issues facing us as a society. Not to mention the tremendous challenge faced by our educators to complete an academic year.

“After 11 successful seasons, it is disappointing to cancel the 2020 season. We support the decision taken; everyone at Spur urges our extended League family to stay safe during these unprecedented times. We are taking a conservative approach to the league in the interests of safety.”

– Sacha Du Plessis, Chief Marketing Officer, Spur Corporation

“As Schools reopened in June with a phased-in approach, new ways of behavior and movement around Covid-19 became the norm. Feedback across the country from respective Schools Cycling Chairpersons was that Schools’ main focus is now on recovering the academic year as schools sports are not yet allowed under the current regulations.

“Schools Cycling South Africa (SCSA) is very proud of our Principals, teachers, learners and parents who adapted to this very different situation under very difficult conditions with so much grace and positivity. We salute you! Your safety and health are the priority now. Continue to enjoy the freedom of exploring our Country’s beautiful trails on your bikes while School sports remain suspended until a date determined by the Minister.

“SCSA will continue to present our Schools Cycling family with education and development programs – please follow us on social media for updates. May your hearts continue to be brave, your minds fierce and your spirits free!

Keep practicing and pedalling with positivity! Until we see again.”

– Annelize Ziehl-Owens, President Schools Cycling South Africa

“Over the past months, it has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm and resilience shown by our League riders to stay fit and committed to their training. The passion for our program is tremendous and we realise that this news will be heart breaking to many, especially our matriculants. By its very design the sport of mountain biking is all about exploring new opportunities and 2020, despite some serious challenges, are sure to present us with many positives. “

– Meurant Botha, SSMTBL Director
